One of the biggest ranking factor in these days of site quality filters, is having lots of quality original content, this is a bit tougher for estore sites, though a blog sections, how to guide articles and extended product category introductions will help.

Google has a booklet covering 'onsite' optimization like you touched on:

www.google.com/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf

All of the link sources you mentioned are sort of second tier quality, getting guest articles published on quality siteses your niche can be import, a PR campaign getting to know the webmaster, perhaps first with some quality blog comments is one way to get in. The new Penguin SEO Spam filter has some people scrambling, trying to have their lowest quality links removed.

you should research the most valuable keywords your site should rank for and incorporate them in your content, there are tools that can check your ranking for a list of some 50 keywords in a single operations. SEO can be a slow process, measuring your keyword ranking is the most direct way to gauge the results.

1. Start an e-zine for your web site. When people read each issue they'll be reminded to revisit your web site. They'll see your product ad more than just once which will increase your orders. 2. Form an online community. It could be an online message board, e-mail discussion list or chat room. When people get involved in your community they will regularly return to communicate with others. 3. Give away an electronic freebie with your ad on it. Allow your visitors to also give the freebie away. This'll increase your ad exposure and attract people to your web site at the same time. 4. Write articles and submit them to e-zines, web sites and magazines that accept article submissions. Include your business information and web address at the end of the article. 5. Participate on message boards. Post answers to other people's questions, ask questions and post appropriate information. Include your signature file at the end of all your postings. 6. Trade links with other web sites. They should be related to the subject of your web site. Instead of trading links, you could also trade banner ads, half page ads, classified ads, etc.
