There's no accurate answer to provide you. I know this is not the answer you're looking for but let me explain a bit in detail. Basically, the hosting package you'll need would be determined by many different factors.

The biggest factor is how many visitors your website gets. Also, it depends on the software powering your shopping cart. What e-commerce cart are you using? Different carts will use resources differently. Take for instance Magento tends to be quite resource intensive and you may be required to be on a VPS or Dedicated server. Using a cart like OpenCart may work better. Also making sure you have a caching module in place is important. Caching modules will store pages statically and serve them to the visitors as needed, reducing the overall load on the server.

OpenCart has multiple options for payment gateways, as do most carts. It really depends on how you want customers to pay for their orders. Every cart has it's benefits and drawbacks. I suggest doing your research and picking a shopping cart that you think will best meet your needs.

As for hosting, most hosts will point you in the right direction as to what hosting package they recommend. I work for a large hosting company (InMotion Hosting) and we do this all the time. Also, we may start a customer out on a shared platform and as their needs grow move them to a VPS or higher. That way, you're paying for what you need - not for what you expect you need.

Payment gateways are not set up through the hostng provider but on your own. You'll configure the payment gateway in the shopping cart once you've set it up with the respective company. It also depends where you are located. You may want to see whats popular in your area? Do most people like using PayPal?

You'll want to look for a company that has their data center closer to where your customers are located. Meaning if you're located on the East Coast of the United States look for a host that has an East Coast Data Center. Why is this important? Well, if you're in Australia and your website is located on a server in the US, it may take more time for a visitor to make a request for a page to the server (hence more hops and longer hops).

I hope this helps!

You can still use a shared plan for hosting magento, you just need to upgrade from the real bottom of the barrel services as this are oversold on old slow servers and are just going to loose you customers by using them. A decent shared plan is the way to go first as this will have no problem serving multiple sites. This would be what to try before going for a VPS or dedicated server. The company i use gives you free support and free migration from your old account to a new one plus are available to answer questions 24/7

A shared server is basically a server for hosting websites but it is shared between many users, some companies offer shared web hosting very cheap but you will be sharing a slow server with sometimes hundreds of other users. This is not ideal as it will impact you with slow load times on a website and will loose you business so its always better to pay a couple of dollars more and

However, not all hosting companies servers are the same, some over charge and some do not offer any type of support. Some offer support that is completely worthless and will not help fix simple issues, others will take 2-4 days before replying to emails and ticket and basically be un-contactable.

I would recommend a company called simple link here http://the-seo-advisor.co.uk/hosting who offer the best shared servers i have ever used but more than that it is their support team who really make this company the best and worthwhile, they have never taken more than a couple of hours to get back to me with solutions, advice and fixes which is more than i can say about godaddy, bluehost, justhost and hostgator.

They are currently have these offers which you can use :

jwoffer = 10% off first order on any package or purchase

jjoff = completely free first month on any shared hosting plan.

These are not available to general public so please do not share them elsewhere.
