Winning the race in any segment is much easier with the wind of a strong trend at your back.

I'm guessing here -- whatever the current trend (public opinion) happens to be may be the support that pushes you forward . . . ??? In other words, if you have the general public behind you, you are more likely to move to the front than if you do not.
