As for submitting to Yahoo, you can try but since your site is "for-profit" they're going to want to charge you $299 a year.

And as for Google AdWords, it's certainly not free. You can set your daily budget to whatever you want, but it's not a very cost-effective way to build traffic to a site that is as broadly targeted as an auction site.

If you're looking to unseat eBay, good luck. What I would do is create a niche auction site -- one for people looking to buy/sell, say, model ships or American Indian artifacts -- something that hasn't been done before. With a niche site, you have a chance. Then you become very active in the forums or groups for your potential buyers and sellers. Post a lot, get involved in discussions, and make sure you have your Web site link in your signature. Advertise in newsletters or e-zines for your target audience. Wherever your target customer is, you should be there too.

There is a simple trick for increasing ranking in the search engines. Post 3 posts every 3 days on relevant blogs. Post 3 posts in forums every 3 days with your URL, and write 3 EZarticles every 3 days about topics related to your site. If you do this for a couple of months you will see significant improvement of your search engine rankings. In the meantime, you can buy quality web traffic to get targeted visitors to your site. Its inexpensive and effective and completely safe.

ABSOLUTELY - DO NOT - SUBMIT YOUR SITE TO THE SEARCH ENGINES!

That is one of biggest mistakes you can ever make.

If you haven't done it yet, don't listen that advice above. Instead, let the search engines find you.

Your webhosting company and Internic will automatically report your domain name along the way and the top search engines will visit your site regardless.

Contacting them first can cause a delay in your site getting listed and it can even cause your site to get dropped, due to lack of a matured site and PR ranking.

In the meantime, build plenty of relevant web pages within your same domain and use correct linking practices.

I agree.....don't submit your site to the indexes as that can delay your site from being indexes for several weeks vs. if you were just to post a link to your site in comments of popular blogs or websites....those get indexed everyday and if you link is on anything that is crawled regulary by the robots then it will crawl & index your url...this can happen in a few days vs. a few weeks.

As far as your low cost tatics go to increase traffic to any site would to be to target customers and use SEO (search engine optimization) to rank high in the Google results page. IF you can get in one to the top ten spots of Google for your keywords then you best bet you are going to be swamped with laser targeted customers ready to jump in or check out your site.

These tactics are all free to use but are time consuming...if you have money to dish out then you can use Googles Adwords by bidding on keywords. You see Google Ads on any page you search for on Google. Those are the ads on the right hand side and top of Google search engine.

Best of luck!!!!

Submit your url to free search engines such as yahoo and google. Google AdWords is an easy and effective way to acquire new customers online or offline. You create text ads that appear alongside Google search results and on Google network sites when people search on keywords-words and phrases that people search for on Google that pertain to your business-you choose.

Post links to your auction site in your Yahoo Answers answers -- but be careful or they'll ban you.
