There are two ways to go about this -- sell your own ad space, which is time consuming or use a third party ad broker to do all the selling for you

1. Join an advertising network. Advertising networks are organizations that aggregate Web sites that offer advertising space, and sell banner ads (and other advertising options) across them. Traffic requirement is often a minimum of 5,000 monthly impressions, although many do not accept sites hosted by free page services.

2. Participate in contextual advertising networks. Contextual advertising are text ads delivered based on the content of the web page using an automated system.

Yahoo! Publishing Network (currently in beta and available to US publishers only) http://publisher.yahoo.com/

Contextweb http://www.contextweb.com/

If you are just starting to earn from advertising, it is easier to start using any of the above ad networks. Some of their advertisers may notice you -- and then skip the ad network and advertise on your site directly. Or at the very least, you get to understand the process and what types of ads work well with your website so you know who you will target

Basic social networking has been around since the early days of the internet, in the form of instant messaging, message boards and forums. Yet, social networks began to take a new form with the creation of sites like Friendster and GeoCities, which allowed people to express themselves in text online. Recently a bright spotlight was placed on these interaction tools. The Web 2.0 movement has evolved social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook and TagWorld and positioned them as the front-runners in the field. Online social networks are here to stay and will continue to gain traction and offer users more interactivity than other media. Advertisers are going to need to take some responsible risks in the new channel.

There are a couple of methods you can use to attract advertisers to your site. The one that I've had the most success with however is the following:

1. Do a search for keywords related to your website on Google. Try to use the most competitive keywords which you can get from keyword related software or simply by looking at the number of competing pages listed in the upper right-hand corner of Google.

2. Start with the 4th search engine result and put the name of each website in a spreadsheet. I like to take from the #4 position to the #20 position.

3. Eliminate those URLs that are for ezine articles, blogs, etc. You are looking for company websites.

4. Email each website to let them know that you are in a top position for a very competitive keyword and can offer valuable exposure. Then, negotiate with each company - presenting your advertising opportunity.

5. Repeat this by analyzing pay per click results. I know this method is somewhat manual, but I have found some of my best paying advertisers using this method.
