My mother and I have partnered a business that we run from home. We sell through the website I created using Yahoo's website builder. The problem is that we need to create more traffic TO our website. We don't exactly have an advertising budget, being as small as we are. Right now, we are registered on the Yahoo and Google search engines. I have even set up an account with both for pay per click advertising. This has helped, but not enough. I am learning, but I am certainly no webmaster. How can I create more traffic to the website so we can generate more business?
If you need to look at the site to give me some advice it is simply ThimbleThings.com

Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it's easier said than done.

You can use pay per click advertising in the search engines to reach audiences looking for your products. You can use Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com

Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE!

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

You should consider buying targeted website traffic. It can be spread out over the course of a few days or a month (depending on your settings), and can serve as a consistent source of daily visits.

If you look at it this way... you can purchase around 10,000 visitors over the next 7 days with VIPWebTraffic.com for super cheap, that turns out averaging around the 1428 visitors per day. Seeing as how you are just starting out, I'd recommend buying one of these smaller targeted web traffic packages and grow from there. As you grow, you can invest in larger packages and grow even further.

I know that http://www.vipwebtraffic.com has a TON of specific niche traffic categories to choose from (including baby-related products). Plus, support is friendly and eager to assist in answering questions.

A word of caution though... not all traffic websites are created equal. Many rely on bot traffic and sending people that do not even speak the dialect that your site is written in. I recommend VIP because none of the spammy, unethical tactics are used.

Other than purchasing targeted website traffic, you can also submit a press release, which gets picked up in Google News pretty quickly (as in a few days). I've personally tried that too and find it to be a good partner with buying targeted web traffic. Another great way is to get quality 1-way back links to your site from high-PR directories and sites.

Good luck!

Hmm, after I red your question... You make me remember about my self, because you are just like me a few months ago, having a website but there is no traffic...!!

Before continue I want to give you some advice on your web --> ThimbleThings.com, i hope it can help you :

1. When opening your webpage, it takes time to open in full.. even I already using a high speed modem. solutions: making the picture smaller or re-size the resolution of the picture.

2. Don't put the "view cart" things right beside the banner.

3. I think you must fix the banner also.

4. You must make your site more eye catching, there is a blank table in "shirt" section, and you put the sponsored links in the wrong position.

5. Some of the picture are big.. it's better smaller.

6. There is a broken link, coz i cannot go back to home from "Gift Cards" section.

7. Wow you have a nice product to sell.. I think that's all about your website, i just review some part of yours.

Now we talk about traffic. First you must increase ranking and web traffic...you might ask me how??? well here it is:

It is worth cataloguing the basic principles to be enforced to increase

website traffic and search engine rankings.

• Create a site with valuable content, products, or services.

• Place primary and secondary keywords within the first 25 words in your page content and spread them evenly throughout the document.

• Research and use the right keywords/phrases to attract your target customers.

• Use your keywords in the right fields and references within your web page. Like Title, META tags, Headers, etc.

• Keep your site design simple so that your customers can navigate easily between web pages, find what they want and buy products and services.

• Submit your web pages i.e. every web page and not just the home page, to the most popular search engines and directory services. Hire someone to do so, if required. Be sure this is a manual submission. Do not engage an automated submission service.

• Keep track of changes in search engine algorithms and processes and accordingly modify your web pages so your search engine ranking remains high. Use online tools and utilities to keep track of how your website is doing.

• Monitor your competitors and the top ranked websites to see what they are doing right in the way of design, navigation, content, keywords, etc.

• Use reports and logs from your web hosting company to see where your traffic is coming from. Analyze your visitor location and their incoming sources whether search engines or links from other sites and the keywords they used to find you.

• Make your customer visit easy and give them plenty of ways to remember you in the form of newsletters, free reports, reduction coupons etc.

• Demonstrate your industry and product or service expertise by writing and submitting articles for your website or for article banks so you are perceived as an expert in your field.

• When selling products online, use simple payment and shipment methods to make your customer’s experience fast and easy.

• When not sure, hire professionals. Though it may seem costly, but it is a lot less expensive than spending your money on a website which no one visits.

• Don’t look at your website as a static brochure. Treat it as a dynamic, ever-changing sales tool and location, just like your real store to which your customers with the same seriousness.

And than you must Know how to get repeated web traffic.

1. Update the pages on your website frequently. Stagnant sites are dropped by some search engines. You can even put a date counter on the page to show when it was last updated.

2. Offer additional value on your website. For affiliates and partners you can place links to their sites and products and ask them to do the same for you. You can also advertise their books or videos, if these products relate to your industry and are not in competition with your own product.

3. You can allow customers to ‘opt in’ to get discounts and special offers. Place a link on your site to invite customers to ‘opt in’ to get a monthly newsletter or valuable coupons.

4. Add a link to your primary page with a script ‘Book Mark or Add this site to your Favorites’.

5. Add a link ‘Recommend this site to a Friend’ so that the visitor can email your website link, with a prewritten title, “Thought you might be interested in this”, just by clicking on it.

6. Brand your website so that visitors always know they are on your site. Use consistent colors, logos and slogans and always provide a ‘Contact Us’ link on each page.

7. Create a ‘Our Policies’ page that clearly defines your philosophy and principles in dealing with your customers. Also post your privacy policy as well so that clients know they are secure when they visit your site.

8. Create a FAQ page which addresses most of the doubts and clarifications about your product or your company that are likely to be asked. This helps to resolve most of the customers doubts in their first

First is carefully select the keywords that you shall be targeting for your site. I would suggest selecting those more particular, long tailed keywords as their would be lesser competition.

If you want it the easy way, hire entities that outsource jobs for search engine marketing like http://www.teamcreatives.com. They have the most affordable quality service.
