Hi There, I have a website which is currently ranking well within one certain area. I need it to rank well within multiple areas. If i were to buy multiple domains and change the keywords etc to the different areas on each domain would this work or would i be penalised by the search engines ?

Assuming you are talking about redirects or the same content on mutiple sites, you will be penalised. Google penalised duplicate content, so your original site should continue to rank well, whereas all the ones which have copied content will be penalised.
