Art... what the hell is that anyway. Who determines what is classified as Art when it all looks crap. Show me a nice picture that looks real... that to me is art..., show me a crappy engine that has been removed from a battered car and painted blue... that is not art but somehow found it's way to the Tate gallery.
To get into art direction I advise you to create something that looks crap and get people to copy it. Well done, you're now directing art.

You'll need to be good at graphic design, able to work to a brief and in partnership with other people, be full of creative ideas and be prepared to work hard. You'll also need technical know-how of various packages (Quark Xpress, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop etc) and be familiar with print buying. You may need some experience, e.g. voluntary, but most of all you have to really want a career in advertising as it's such a competitive industry. Be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way up!

Do you mean start being a working, selling artist?
1. Make lots of art (every day...it's a full time job not 'when i feel like it' job)
2. find shows...lots of places to show....coffee shops, bookstores, bars, and of course galleries: take examples of your work and ask for a show
3.art fairs...there's tons of them---some free to enter or organize your own
4.internet galleries....there's tons of them
5.ebay
6.contests---magazines, fairs,internet
7. Make lots more art
