What is the benefits of keeping this information secret. Surely if we all knew what was needed to optimize our website then we would all implement what is needed and search engine position would be determined by relevance and content quality, making the Google ranking Fair. So why do Google insist this algorithm must be kept secret.

Hmmm, this is really a funny question. Imagine if Microsoft, Yahoo! or Ask.com could get their hands on the algorithm to improve their search results! In theory their algorithm is a billion dollar secret, out of all the search engines it provides the best relevant search results. Would you give out your trade secret that makes you billions?

Well, with an encryption algorithm, someone has to decrypt it for it to be useful. That means the algorithm needs to be public. However, with any algorithm, finding the key is the tricky part. Even knowing the full algorithm, trying to find the key of a 512-bit encryption would take a long time.

If they didn't keep it a secret, every porn site and spam site would use the algorithm and be ranked first for every keyword you search. Then no matter what you searched, you would get irrelevant results and it would take 10 times longer to surf the web to find the information you want because you would be sifting through junk.
