You did not state what your product is, so it's hard to say exactly. But in general you can try advertising through blogs.

There are people who write blogs for profit. Usually these blogs are seen by about 50,000 - 100,000 (unique hits, meaning different IPs, not the same ones) a day. For a small fee, they can do an advertorial (not advertisement, there's a difference) for you, or you can invite them to try out your product or service for free in exchange for a review.

Profit-blogs are effective because these people usually have a group of fans who will respond favourably to a good review. These fans usually also own a blog as well, who will in turn talk about your product if it's exciting or useful.

The best way to choose which blog to advertise with would be to decide who are your target customers and which blog has the largest such readership. Beware though, if you've miscalculated your who your target audience with, the impact will not be great.

Blogs are great because they free and depending on your business, they can serve as your website and they look much better than geocities. Try typepad or wordpress. Make sure that you are spending just as much time commenting on other peoples blog that are in your or in a related industry.

I would also write a lot of press releases and send them through the online pr free sites, like prweb.

Make sure that you get your business listed on google maps, and yahoo maps.

And finally, if you do want to spend a small budget in pay per click advertising, I would suggest that you really specify that you want you ad to be returned as a local listing. This makes your dollar more powerful that advertising to the whole country .

One of my favourite ways promoting sites is through press release campaigns.

Think of interesting angles that would make your potential customers comes to your site then use Google Press releases to get the message out there.

This is much quicker than natural SEO and much cheaper than PPC but the results can hang around on webwires for a long time and get good search engine presence and visitor count.

When you're writing your press release be conscious though of getting hooks in place, especially in the headline, that will make the person who finds it want to read more and then follow the link to your actual website.

The idea of traffic exchanges is that you visit other sites in return for people visiting your site. Traffic Swarm is an example of a traffic exchange.

These are sites like DirectMatches, AdLandPro, Ryze, and MySpace. Find people with related interests. Make friends and invite people to your site. Post your link to your website on your profile

8. Email Signature

Put a signature in your email that includes a link to your website. You probably already send emails, so why not use that to increase traffic?
