Don't listen to any of the given answers, as both parties are WAY OFF in their assumed assumption as to what it takes to get a website on the 1st page of Google. I've gotten a 'blog' on the 1st page of Google well w/in 24 hours, so I know it's possible, but it takes more then just throwing up a website and 'pinging' it...
First off, regarding 'keywords', you don't need some 'obscure' keyword that no one is going to possibly search for to get on the 1st page of big "G"...You just need to make sure that whatever keyword/search term/search phrase your site is based around has a relatively low monthly search volume (# of searches per day over a 30 day time line) and less then about 50,000 competing web pages. Let's say I want to get my website about 'disposable wedding cameras' on the 1st page of Google. Well, using the Google Adwords Keyword tool (FREE RESOURCE), I know this search term got searched for over 4,000 times last month (April) and has a monthly 'average' of just over 3,000 searches. By going to google.com and typing in this search term, using QUOTES to get an exact match on how many other websites are also competing for this SPECIFIC search term, I see I would be going up against 47,000+ pages....NOT Bad.
Now, on my website, I would do the following....(Assuming I already have a domain name/hosting account setup)
#1 Use the search term (disposable wedding cameras) in my 'title tag' and 'description tag' within my website's HTML
#2. I would use this longtail keyword search phrase (disposable wedding cameras) about 3-5 times within my sites 'body' tag...this is the text you actually see on every website...or about a 2% density based on how many words my home page has. For example, if my home page (The 1st page a visitor comes to) only has about 400 words on it, I'd use the keyword about 2-3 times.
#3: I would then move on to using social bookmarking sites, such as technorati, deli.ciou.us and a few others and 'bookmark' the site. Search Engines, most importantly, GOOGLE..all LOVE Social Web 2.0 bookmarking sites.
#4. Write a quick article or two around my main keyword phrase (disposable wedding cameras) and upload them to two (2) article directories...www.easyarticles.com and www.goarticles.com - both of these sites will not only publish the articles fairly quickly, but because these sites themselves are already well liked and highly ranked within the big "G", I'd be piggy-backing on their overall link popularity, thus allowing my article link (example: www.easyarticles.com/electronics/disposable-wedding-camers.html) to more then likely get indexed in Google fairly quickly.
All in all, it is possible to get a website INDEXED and on the 1st page of Google fairly quickly...but there are several key factors to take into consideration...I would suggest heading over to www.warriorforum.com and reading the relevant sections regarding SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to get a better understanding and to further your online eduction when it comes to knowing just "how" to market a web site and get it found fairly quickly.
Hope this helps?
