Hmm, thats a hard one - you will need a trustworthy seo agent to analyse your site - Instead of getting feedback from one seo company I would suggest you get reports of your site from at the least 3 or 4 different companies - Nearly all of the seo companies will provide you with a free report. If they all come back with the same results then you know for sure that they were using black hat techniques. If you get a report from one seo company only then they could be telling you fibbs just so that you leave your current company and go with them. One thing that I will mention is that black hat techniques will get you to page 1 fast but you will also loose your rankings just as fast also. As mentioned above you could get the sandbox penalty and get deindexed if this was to happen. Just remember as long as you didnt provide your ftp access then you should be fine as if there was a method used then they would have to directly implement it on your site - For those that dont agree with this then all I can say is that if a technique existed to get your site penalised without actually having access to the sites core files then im sure many companies would be paying thousands to get their competitors sites penalised - Google understands this. Anyway best of luck.

Keyword Stuffing

Keyword stuffing is the practice of filling a web page with keywords or numbers so that the search engine will think the page is relevant to the search. Usually these keywords are irrelevant to the actual site. Sometimes these keywords are hidden so that they are not seen by the user, but are still scanned by the search engine. Keyword stuffing can result in poor user experience and ultimately harm your site’s ranking.

Cloaking

Cloaking refers to the technique of showing different content to crawlers than that of what you show to your users. One form of cloaking is using various keywords, titles, and descriptions that are entirely different from what your actual content is really about. There is a high chance that if a search engine determines that the site is cloaking, it will be banned.

Link Farms

Link farms are a group of websites that use hyperlinks to connect with one another for the pure interest of trying to increase their rankings. These links ultimately won’t provide any traffic to your site, but are used to trick the search engine into seeing that the site links to many other sites. This method could be used because based on the amount of links and their quality, the search engines can calculate the popularity of your web page thus, it’s position in rankings on the search engine result page.

Link Buying and Link Exchange Programs

Link buying is the act of purchasing links from another site to give you a link to your website in order to get a link to your website. These links are intended to manipulate a site’s ranking in Google so it appears higher. Link exchange programs are programs where one can exchange links with others. Excessive link exchanging is forbidden by Google.

Article Spinning

Article spinning is a technique in which website owners post a unique version of relevant content on their site by rewriting existing articles and replacing parts for a slightly different perspective on the topic. Article spinning reduces the quality of the original article no matter how it is done. Article spinning also limits the places that you can put your articles in the future.

Doorway Pages

Doorway pages are where you spam the index of search engines to catch visitors using a page of no real value, which then redirects the user to a completely different page. Doorway pages are created to be visible to only specific search engines and their crawlers with the purpose of deceiving the search engine into giving the site higher rankings.

What Is Black Hat SEO, Anyways?

Black Hat SEO is most commonly defined as a disapproved practice that increases a page's ranking in a search engine result page (SERP). These practices are against the search engine's terms of service and can result in the site being banned from the search engine and affiliate sites. A list of tactics and strategies employed by black hat SEO practitioners have been openly denounced on Google's Webmaster Guidelines and Bing's Webmaster Guidelines. If no value is added to the user, but rankings are likely to increase, then your decisions are highly likely to be black hat. The same test can be applied to to paid search practices to determine whether an activity is considered black hat ppc.

Black hat SEO is both a myth and a reality we have to face sooner or later as SEO practicioners. The sheer existence of black hat SEO techniques must be acknowledged for several reasons.

Hidden text

Create modern CSS based websites with JQuery effects. They often hide large portions of text in layers to display them on click or mouse over for usability reasons.

Cloaking

Hide the heavy Flash animations from Google, show the text-only version optimized for accessibility and findability.

Paid links

Donate for charity, software developers etc. Many of them display links to those who donate.

Keyword stuffing

Tags and folksonomy. Keyword stuff but adding several tags or let your users do the dirty work via UGC tagging every major social site does that.

Mispsellings

Define, correct the misspelled term and/or redirect to the correct version.

Scraping

Create mirrors for popular sites. Offer them to the respective webmasters. Most will be glad to pay less.

Ad only pages

Create all page ads and show them before users see content like many old media do.

Link farm

Create a legit blog network of flagship blogs. A full time pro blogger can manage 3 to 5 high quality blogs by her or himself.

New exploits

Find them and report them, blog about them. You break story and thus you get all the attention and links. Dave Naylor is excellent at it.
