SEO newby question! I am adding backlinks (10 per day, 7 sites) & wondered how to know if they were working?

I am a small business owner, and had some web sites that I have owned that were not getting much traffic. I read backlinks were a good cheap way to increase traffic, so I had been adding backlinks to my sites to increase their traffic. Every site I found in my industry with a PR 3 or higher, I was submitting a 1 way link to all 7 of my web sites. I have been doing this for about a week, but I would like to know how to track my efforts better. Any suggestions for a SEO newby do-it-yourselfer?

In some cases it can take months for your search rank to be credited with some backlinks, Yahoo Site Explorer appears to report all the backlinks it has discovered, unlike big G which in it's opaque fashion appears to only reveals a few teasers.

For most accurate explorer results, click the links count, select Show Inlinks: "except this site", to: "entire site"

It would be worthwhile to also check the backlinks of the top ranked competition, noting not only the number of links but also their quality and relevance. I was surprised to learn how many top ranked sites don't have bum marketer style links, like blog comments, but instead paid bloglist inclusions on unrelated sites.

What kind of backlinks? The best way to see if they are working is to watch your ranking in the engines each week - you should be moving up. Seodigger.com is a great tool for this.

I run a seo firm. I can tell you out of everything I've learned, the most powerful traffic methods is article submission. This has ranks most of my website on the first page of google, and brought tons of targeted traffic.

I use and recommend automatic article submitter for this to save loads of hours and money. You can see my review of it here: http://article-submission-software-review.com

depending on your niche and level of competition, it might take weeks or months before you find out how your link building campaign is working. not sure what link building approach you are taking and how many links are actually pointing to your site so its hard to advice.

you are right about backlinks and they can help you increase your site's SERP ranking. each link building method is different and for best result, you need to utilize several link building methods. keep building links and never give up. most people fail because they dont stay on the track. seo is not an overnight process and it takes time to get result. so if you keep building links, good things will come to you

We use different steps for getting back links. Such as, directory submission, article submission, forum posting etc. In case of directory submission, you must fill a form. and after that, you must found a message, such as: waiting for approval. After some time, you check your mail box and just accept that mail, which is relevant with your directory. In this way, you can understand, your link is approve. After day by day, when you link to check your back link, then just use this, link:site url. If you have seen, the number of back links is increasing day by day, then you think, your working style is good.

Yes it is hard work and requires patience. It is also only worth looking for high quality links and the best way to obtain those is on the phone to the site owner. A rate of one of these per day would be a good rate of acquisition.

First, you need to know if you are actually linked by those sites. You can maually check in google by using the following syntax.

link:www.[your domain].com.

Then you can get your website statistic to see if there is increase traffic from those site. You can also check your google page rank.
